Sanders William Jones was born on 24 Jul 1839 in Ohio, United States and was the son of William Jones and Elizabeth (Eliza) McCurdy.

His parents, William and Avis Jones relocated their family to
Hancock County, Illinois by 1850.

In 1862, Sanders William Jones, a resident of La Harpe, Illinois enlisted in the Union Army for three years as a Private on 15 Aug 1862. On 7 Nov 1863, Private Jones was assigned to the 118th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company A. On 12 Jan 1863, Private Jones was discharged due to a disability.  The 118th was organized in Camp Butler, Springfield, Illinois. The regiment was attached to 1st Brigade, 9th Division, Right Wing, XIII Corps, Department of the Tennessee, on 7 Nov 1862.  Private Jones participated in the Vicksburg Campaign in W.T. Sherman's Yazoo Pass Expedition, a joint operation of Major General Ulysses S. Grant and Rear Admiral David D. Porter's, Mississippi River Sqaudron; the Chickasaw Bayou 26-28 Dec 1862; the Chickasaw Bluffs 29 Dec 1862.

Following the war, Sanders relocated his family to Pisgah, Iowa, Harrison County, Iowa, United States and would remain in Harrison County Iowa for sixty-four years.

Sanders is noted as having three wives, Phebe, Elizabeth V. Alton (at least three known children) and Mary Emily Bryceson (at least four known children) who he was married to for fifty-one years before his death in 1930.

Private Sanders William Jones died on 14 Nov 1930 at the age of 91 years, 3 months, 21 days in Little Sioux, Harrison, Iowa, United States and interred in Little Sioux Cemetery, Little Sioux, Harrison County, Iowa.
